This article explores various methods of teaching area in mathematics, with a particular focus on the Socratic approach and identity-based methods. The main goal is to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of the area of geometric shapes—an understanding that is often reduced to memorization of formulas and superficial techniques.
Given the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving, the article employs Socratic methods to encourage students not only to use formulas but also to develop the ability to discover and reason through geometric concepts. Through a range of examples and exercises, the instructional processes related to the area of squares, rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms are examined.
Furthermore, the article highlights the importance of using identity-based approaches in teaching area, enabling students to better understand the relationships between different area formulas through comparison and alignment of geometric properties.
